3Dimensions Mammography System Named the Coolest Thing Made in Delaware
Winning a recent award has confirmed what employees at Hologic have long believed: saving lives is pretty cool.
Since Hologic pioneered the 3D Mammography™ Exam more than a decade ago, this technology has been used all around the world to detect breast cancer. In the company’s pursuit to produce the 3Dimensions™ mammography system, it has recognized Delaware as an area to secure leading talent and has expanded facilities in the city of Newark.
The newly announced award, “Coolest Thing Made in Delaware,” recognizes products manufactured in the state. This contest had online voters picking the coolest products round by round until a champion was crowned, featuring over 50 products from 40 companies. Hologic ultimately became the winner of this first-time prize by beating out stiff competition like Dover spacesuits and Bloom Energy Boxes.

We’re so proud of our team. Newark has become a hub for innovation and a culture committed to excellence that keeps getting better. Thank you to all our engineers, designers, technicians and production staff who make cool Hologic devices every day. And thank you to the customer-facing teams who maximize the impact of those instruments.
Hologic established its presence in Newark, Delaware through an acquisition of Direct Radiography Corporation in 1999. Since then, the Hologic team has manufactured mammography imaging detectors, a critical component of the 3Dimensions system. In recent years, it has undergone a significant expansion of staffing, facilities and scope of products.
Brian Brooks, who oversees operations at Hologic Newark, accepted the award during a Chamber of Commerce ceremony on March 28. He said, “This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication and unwavering commitment of every member of our Hologic team. I am proud to represent all of them. Winning this award is a reminder that, in the world of manufacturing, success is not measured solely by the products we create but also by the impact we have on the lives of others.”
The manufacturing industry employs about 28,000 Delaware residents, constituting roughly 5% of jobs in the state. The Chamber of Commerce and its affiliate, the Delaware Manufacturing Association, created the “Coolest Thing” contest to honor the manufacturing field and promote the sector as a top career path.
“[Hologic’s 3Dimensions system] not only contributes to the strength of our state's manufacturing sector, but also empowers women with a vital tool for early detection and better health outcomes. Hologic's commitment to creating lifesaving technologies and supporting Delaware’s workforce makes them truly deserving of this award,” said Delaware State Chamber of Commerce President Mike Quaranta.
