We Have the Power to Help Stop Rising Cervical Cancer Rates
Each January, in honor of Cervical Health Awareness Month (CHAM), Hologic joins healthcare professionals, women’s health advocates and cervical cancer survivors to highlight the importance of regular, comprehensive screening to help prevent cervical cancer.
Recent studies have shown cervical cancer is increasing in the US, but we know that when caught early, cervical cancer can be preventable. Screening with Pap + HPV together (co-testing) can help prevent cervical cancer.
To address the urgent need for screening awareness, we created a range of educational content across events, broadcast media and social media aimed at inspiring women to take control of their health and get screened. Featured activities in 2024 included:
- National media tour highlighting the importance of prevention and early detection: Dr. Kameelah Phillips, a board-certified OB/GYN, and cervical cancer survivor Mindy Hylton spoke with multiple TV and radio stations across the country to discuss the importance of screening with Pap + HPV together (co-testing). Mindy shared her inspiring personal survival story to encourage women to prioritize their health and well-being. Interview segments featuring Dr. Phillips and Mindy reached viewers across the country, including in cities like Austin and Denver.
- Publication addressing solutions for declining screening rates: Dr. Michael Randell shared his expert perspective with Contemporary OB/GYN, noting that fewer women are getting screened as often as recommended, which is contributing to an increase of cervical cancer in the U.S. He also addressed how enhancing communication and education can help encourage women to schedule visits with their OB/GYNs to get the care they need.
- Social media amplification: Hologic provided educational content and resources through social media channels, including highlights from a recent ACOG product theater, about cervical cancer screening.
Because this is one of the few cancers that can be prevented, educating about the crucial role of Pap + HPV together (co-testing) is imperative to encourage women to prioritize regular well-woman visits with their OB/GYNs and protect their cervical health. These collective CHAM efforts are only a few examples of our ongoing commitment to eradicate cervical cancer and save women’s lives. Learn more about cervical cancer prevention.
