Marianthi Hatzis: A Battle Against Cancer
Diagnosed with Lymphoma at 12 and DCIS at 27, Marianthi Hatzis's resilience shines through her story.
It’s an undeniable truth in healthcare: Regular screenings for cancer, and other serious conditions save lives.
Marianthi Hatzis, a Clinical Account Manager with Hologic, was first diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 12. She discovered a large lump in her neck and, after numerous doctor visits and a surgery at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, was diagnosed with stage 4B Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
At age 27, after a routine mammogram due to her previous cancer treatments, she was diagnosed with DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma in Situ). Treatment included a double lumpectomy, fertility treatments and radiation.
We talked to her about her experience.
What Kept You Going?
"My faith that there was a purpose behind my battles and the support of my family and friends kept me going. I wanted to live for my future family, my siblings, my parents, and future patients who could benefit from my experience. Failure was never an option."
Advice to Other Women:
"Early detection is key. Cancer is not a death sentence anymore. Get your screenings and find power in that instead of fueling fear. Be your own advocate, ask questions, and trust your care team. Lean on your support systems and take it one day at a time."
